Sperm Donation Guide

About Sperm

The average male produces 20 million sperm per millilitre. Anything over 15 million is considered to be normal. If you produce less than this you are considered to be suffering from male infertility.

It’s not just the amount of sperm you produce that is important in achieving a pregnancy but also the motility and morphology of your sperm.

  • If more than 60% of your sperm are motile you are considered to have a healthy level of sperm motility.
  • If 4% or more of your sperm are observed as having normal morphology you are considered to have a good level of sperm morphology.
  • In fertility clinics a level of less than 2 ml in volume is considered to indicate a male infertility issue.
  • A PH level of 7.2-7.8 is considered to be normal – anything outside of this range can cause damage to the sperm.
  • The amount of time sperm takes to form into a thin liquid after ejaculation is known as liquefaction. Anything up to 60 minutes for sperm to turn into thin liquid is considered normal.
  • Motility refers to how many million sperm in one ejaculate are highly motile. A fertility will often only perform artificial insemination with sperm that contains 20 million motile sperm. This can be used across 8 straws/vials if you have techniques such as IUI or IVF with donor sperm.

A simple semen analysis which involves ejaculating into a sterile pot will clarify the following area of health of your sperm:

  • Appearance
  • Volume
  • PH
  • Liquefaction
  • Total Motility:

-Rapid/moderate
-Slow Progression
-Non Progressive
-Immotile

  • Concentration
  • Total Sperm Count
  • Morphology
  • Leucocytes

There has been a sharp drop in sperm count in normal men in the last 50 years.

Carlsen E, Giwercman A, Keiding N, Skakkebæk NE. Evidence for decreasing quality of semen during past 50 years. Br Med J 305:609-613 (1992).

A healthy balanced lifestyle is important in order to maintain a good sperm count:

  • Quit smoking as it has been proven to reduce your sperm count, sperm motility and the amount of time your sperm stays alive.
  • Reduce your alcohol intake as drinking excess amounts lowers the production of sperm and also reduces the level of male hormone testosterone in your body.

Sperm and Pregnancy

A male with a good quality sperm count of 40 million will have an 18% success rate of getting a woman pregnant. Compare this with a male whose sperm count volume is 10 million there is only an 11% success rate for pregnancy.

What exactly is Sperm Donation?

Sperm donation is when a man ejaculates sperm with the premise of providing that sample to a single woman or couple to become pregnant by home insemination, natural insemination or by artificial insemination.

Sperm donation samples can be provided by a known donor or anonymous donor. These samples are used in IVF and IUI treatments that help to achieve pregnancy.

Sperm donors are often used by single women and lesbians but there are other reasons why people will choose to find a sperm donor:

-Poor sperm count (motility)

-Erectile dysfunction

-Azoospermia

Sperm Donor Screening

Whether you are donating through a sperm bank or by home insemination a sperm donor must always be tested for health and fertility reasons: The sperm donor screening process includes tests for: Infectious diseases including:

-Genetic diseases

-Blood type

-Rhesus factor

Known Sperm Donors

What is a known sperm donor?

A known sperm donor is someone who will donate sperm to a female via a private arrangement either by home insemination or through a fertility clinic. A known donor could be a friend or a member of an introductory agency such as Co-ParentMatch.com

A known donor will be known to both the recipient and the child if that is something that is agreed between all parties. This type of arrangement is used when the donor wants to be known to the child or be part of the child’s life to whatever extended is agreed i.e. updates by email, occasional visits or perhaps a co-parenting role.

We highly recommend you read our guidance on the legalities of a known sperm donor as depending how a child is conceived there is strong likelihood that a known donor will have parental rights and responsibilities.

Anonymous Sperm Donor Facts

What is an anonymous sperm donor?

An anonymous donor is someone who donates his sperm to a female recipient and wishes to undisclose his identity. Traditionally sperm donors donating through a sperm bank would remain anonymous until any child born as a result of their donation reaches 18 years of age.

It is possible to donate anonymously to women outside of sperm banks. Some men choose not to give their identity to women they are donating to by mutual consent with the woman. This is not entirely lawful as if your recipient achieves a pregnancy you will have parental rights and responsibilities in the eyes of the law.

There are also risks that come along with this method as donating anonymously means that a woman cannot confirm that the donor is disease free as they do not know his true identity and cannot check medical test results.
There may also be issues later in life with any genetic conditions donor children develop and there is no way of then getting in touch with the donor.
